Thai massage, or "Nuad Boran", has been practised in Thailand for centuries. It actually has its roots in India over 2500 years ago and is based on Ayurvedic medicine and yoga. This massage style has been handed down through an unbroken chain for centuries from Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha or Shivago, who was a close friend of the Bhuddha and a great physician. He is also famous for techniques of herbal cures and steam baths. He is honoured by many Thais as the father of medicine is the same way that Hippocrates is considered the father of Western medicine.
It is presumed that Thai massage reached what is now Thailand in the 3rd or 2nd century BC along with Buddhism. There seems to be some connection between acupuncture and acupressure and well as other aspects of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Thai medicine.
The main principle behind the techniques of Thai massage is the principle of “Metta”, usually translated as loving kindness, rooted in Buddhist teachings and precepts were methods of building humility, compassion and concentration in the healer which are designed to bring him/her to a deeper level of awareness: if the mind is wandering or if compassionate intent is absent, then the massage will be nothing more than a series of physical movements. The benefits are multiplied tenfold when the touch is infused with the will to heal.
Traditional Thai massage is typically done on a mat on the floor instead of a massage table and the client remains completely clothed throughout the session. No oils are used. It incorporates a combination of acupressure, energy meridian work and yoga like stretching. The typical routine can be varied to suit a wide range of physical needs. A typical session lasts 1 to 2 hours.
Feet and hand massage: If you do not have much time, let it not get in the way of treating yourself to some kind massage. So if you can spare a half hour to an hour get yourself a feet and hand massage. There are many nerve endings in the feet and the hands and it is well know in acupuncture and Shiatsu, that manipulating these points can have benefit for the whole body, and is very relaxing and is a great stress buster.
LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE
Lymphatic drainage massage is a very gentle massage to restore your body’s lymph drainage, which may have become impaired as a result of an operation and can therefore be useful as a post operative treatment.
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and ducts that collects and drains fluid from the body tissues and has important functions in the body’s immune system, in distributing nutrients to the body cells and eliminating waste. Even though its network is as extensive as the blood vessels it has no pump like the heart to circulate lymph around the body. It relies partly on gravity and movement of the body to circulate.
Its flow can often become impaired leading to edema or water retention in the limbs such as the arms or the legs often after an operation where either some lymph modes have been removed or the circuit has been broken. In this case lymphatic drainage massage can help in alleviating the swelling by draining the excess fluid and by unblocking lymphatic channels. Since most of the lymphatic is on the very surface of the body the massage is very gentle.
No oils or very little oil is required but the practitioner has to work directly on the surface of the skin. The massage usually takes place on a massage table and lasts about one hour.
Daniel will show you how to treat yourself as he strongly believes in empowering the individual to effect his own therapy as much as possible.
CHAIR MASSAGE & INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
For some, a chair massage may be more comfortable than lying on a table or on a mat on the floor. The chair can be adjusted for maximum comfort. It is also suitable for those who want a quick massage. Oils are generally not used and the massage is done over clothing. Palming, pressure point work, kneading with hands, the use the forearm, the elbow, the knuckles are all used on the back mainly. The arms, the hands and the head can also be worked on as well as some parts of the legs and the feet. The only area that is left out is the front.
Indian head massage: There is a lot of tension that builds up in the head and there is nothing more relaxing than a head massage to release it. Quite apart from the health benefits it is very good to keep you looking young and healthy by helping you get rid of wrinkles. In Chinese acupuncture many parts of the body can be worked on by manipulating the ears.
A head massage will also include work on the upper shoulders, neck, the cranium, the face and should last about half an hour and is therefore good for those with limited time.
DEEP TISSUE AND MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
Table massage which includes deep tissue and myofascial massage uses a little bit of oil or massage waxes and works on a deep level with muscles, tendons and fascia. It releases tension, restores the proper functioning of muscles and addresses any imbalances. The SLM massage is like a deep tissue massage.
Sports massage is used primarily to get Athletes to maximize their performance, to heal their injuries and recover from a sports event. It emphasizes prevention and healing of muscles and tendons. The therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area which may be related to sports that you play whether it be golf, tennis, football or rugby.
Sports massage is also good for people with injuries ,chronic pain and restricted range of movement.
A deep tissue massage is used in order to increase blood circulation, release tightness in the muscles, deal with muscle imbalances and trigger point release to reduce pain in the body to help it recover and rid it of restrictions.
There are 4 types of sports massage: Pre event-to prepare the body for an event and loosen and stimulate muscles.
Just before an event, to warm up muscles and normalize the tissues.
During training so as to allow the athlete to train without incurring injuries.
Post event to deal with any injuries so that the body can recover quickly and effectively
You should get a sports massage if you have a specific reoccurring problem such as a knee injury or shoulder injury. The underlying cause of such reoccurring injury may be dealt with, which could involve adjustments of how to move or exercises to address any weakness in some muscles along with a massage to soften any tightness in the muscles.
Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage that is very relaxing and therapeutic. It is characterised by its long uninterrupted strokes with the use of the elbows, forearms, hands, knuckles and fingers. Oil is used and it is performed on a bare massage table. The recipient is undressed but covered with a cloth. It is like a dance in the sense that it is very rhythmic and performed to music. Definitely to be experienced if you want to be transformed to a beautiful heavenly place and experience a space of full relaxation where your body can heal. It can last from 1 hour to 1 hour and a half.
The Gladwell massage is a combination of the best sequences from all the modalities that I learnt over the years. It is a mix of Thai, oil, Osteopathy, Shiatsu, abdominal massage, reflexology, harmonics, fascia work, muscle energy techniques, passive and active techniques, acupressure, deep tissue and rocking techniques all organised in a flowing sequence. It is based on the premise that no one modality has all the answers and why not learn and take the best from each for they all work on some aspects of the physiology of the body and some on even more subtle aspects such as energy lines or sen line which are recognised by acupuncturists and Shiatsu practitioners.
The Gladwell massage is quite intuitive and it attempts to deal with your issues without following a set sequence. It can last an hour or two dependent on the time you want and it will include the use of some oil and a few stretches if it will be deemed to be of use in dealing with your problem. You can also decide to not have oil if you so wish.
I try to live up to my name and pray that I will leave you feeling glad and well at the end of it.
Apart from the benefits of a relaxing massage and its benefits as a means of prevention if you have any of the following issues I may be able to help:
Shoulders and neck pains
Back pain will affect a large percentage of us over our lifetime.
Unfortunately our modern lifestyle of sitting for long periods either at our desk, in front of a computer, in our cars and in front of the TV is responsible for so much of it. We are not designed for long periods of sitting and we have never in the history of the human race sat for such long periods. Having said that, we may not be able to avoid it but we can avoid a lot of the problems associated with it by sitting properly. Lack of regular exercise, bad posture, our diet, lack of proper hydration and muscle imbalances also take their share of the blame. Lower back pain is the most common for it is there that the spine takes a lot of the punishment. In more serious cases there is a rupture of the disc between the vertebrates, which can push against the nerves which come out of the spinal cord. We often feel it with pain down our legs which is referred to as sciatica, as it is the sciatic nerve which is affected. Since all the nerves which govern the functions of all our vital organs come out of our spine, in very serious cases it can effect the proper functions of these organs and we may experience other problems related to this. I experienced this myself many years ago and for two days I couldn’t urinate even though my bladder was bursting and that was on top of the unrelenting pain that I had in my lower back. I became an expert on back pain as a result of this ordeal and I have good news for those suffering from the worst kind of back pain. I was told I needed an operation, for my MRI scan showed a severe prolapse of my lumbar disc. I’m happy to report nearly 20 years later I am now pain free and did not have that operation. So cheer up you sufferers out there – don’t despair. I am the living proof that there is a pain-free life awaiting you even though you may be suffering terribly now.

CHI NEI TSANG (ABDOMINAL MASSAGE)
Chi Nei Tsang (abdominal massage) Abdominal Chi massage – is becoming popular as therapy. Chi Nei Tsang is a specialist massage technique for the abdomen and internal organs. It was brought to the West by Chi-Kung Master Mantak Chia as part of the Universal Tao Healing system. Even though it focuses primarily on the abdomen and the internal organs, in practice, it works on every part of the body as well as the client’s mental, emotional and spiritual aspects. It helps in detoxifying and clearing the main organs in the body and also works on a deeply emotional level since the abdominal area is the location of the solar plexus where a lot of emotional baggage is stored.
It is done on a massage table with oil and the abdominal area is manipulated with the hands, fingers and sometimes with the forearms. Acupressure is used and deep tissue strokes. The pressure applied can be quite soft or quite deep dependent on one’s tolerance. Breathing plays a part in the massage.
The massage should leave one feeling relaxed and decongested esp. in the abdominal area. A healthy abdominal is important to one health and well-being. There is a saying that health starts in the gut. Some deep emotional release sometimes occurs.
The massage last for 1 hour and should be done on an empty stomach. No food should be consumed for at least an hour and a half before the massage. It is a great massage to do as part of a detox program and the greatest benefits from it can be experienced if one is fasting from food for a prolonged period of time.
Not recommended for pregnant woman or during ones menstrual cycle.
Daniel took his diploma in Chiang Mai Thailand where Mantak Chia has his famous healing Spa called Tao Gardens Resort.
ACCUPUNCTURE AND CUPPING
The ancient Chinese art of acupuncture. It looks at diseases and dysfunctions of the body from a completely different perspective. Based on needling certain point of the body’s energy channels to unblock the body’s vital life force of Chi and diagnoses and determines a course of treatment based upon what is going on with the individual. Very effective for most conditions and especially when combined with massage. I have had a lot of success with using this combination on people with carpal tunnel syndrome and frozen shoulders. It is another effective tool that we are able to use to effect a cure. If you are a bit squeamish about the use of needles I can use acupressure instead of needles. However I can guarantee that the needling is not painful.
Cupping is another tool that I use effectively for back issues and shoulder pain. It enhances blood circulation to an area and along with that comes healing. It has been widely used, not only in China but throughout the middle east and eastern Europe for hundreds if not thousands of years.
I learnt under the tutelage of Bernard Nolan M.B.Ac.C at the Oxford university sports ground. He was the physio and taught it at most football clubs in the U.K including Man City, Man Utd, Newcastle, Everton and Arsenal. He also worked with Pro cycling teams and has appeared on TV many times.
